Our History

Seneca church of Christ Congregation History.

The Seneca congregation's history began in 1952 when 23 Christians from various cities gathered in the home of Thomas and Audrey Rackley. With the Judson Mill congregation in Greenville's support, which later became the Edgewood Church of Christ. The newly formed congregation in Seneca managed to secure a rental worship space within months.

By 1955, we had our first building on Townville Street in Seneca. Between 1969 and 1972, Brother Jerry Westmoreland, supported by an Arkansas congregation, served as the preacher for Seneca. Throughout the years, the congregation has thrived under the guidance of devoted preachers such as Larry Mathis, Randy Smith, Terry Phelps, Adam Richardson, and the current preacher, David Langley.

Although the congregation was modest in size during the 1970s and early 1980s, it expanded through the faith and backing of families like the Phillips, Cannons, and Thompsons, and with assistance from the Berry’s Chapel congregation in Tennessee. In 1985, Jim Phillips and Bill Cannon were named the first elders. Since then, Seneca has been blessed with dedicated men serving in the role of elder, including Glenn Shinn, Steve Loftis, Baxter Sowell, Bently Wigley, Ricky Clark, and Skip Haguewood.

Presently, Steve Loftis, Bently Wigley, Ricky Clark, and Skip Haguewood serve as elders.

As of 2024, the Seneca Church of Christ stands as an independent congregation with over 150 members, enjoying both spiritual and numerical strength. We engage in supporting missionaries, assisting other congregations, and joyfully serving our community. The initial seed sown in 1952 has flourished into a spiritually dynamic congregation.
