Walking In: Choosing the Right Path

We recently watched a documentary about climbers attempting to summit Mount Everest. Would it surprise you to know that over 13,000 people have stood on that peak? What was once nearly impossible has, in many ways, become more attainable. Advances in technology, training, weather prediction, and the footsteps of those who went before have raised the success rate to an astonishing 98%.

In fact, on May 18–19, 2025, 722 climbers reached the summit in just two days.

Yet Everest still carries a sobering truth.

Since 1953, when Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary first reached the summit, 405 climbers have died attempting the climb. More than 200 bodies remain on the trail, frozen in ice—silent witnesses to the dangers of the mountain.

They remind every climber of a hard reality:
You must be certain of what you are walking in.

Two Trails in Life

There are two trails every person walks in this life.

One trail is narrow, steep, and demanding—but it leads to life.

The other trail is wide, filled with shortcuts and false hopes—and it leads to destruction.

Matthew 7:13–14 (ESV)“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.
For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

Jesus does not soften His words. The narrow way is hard—but it is the only way that leads to life.

The Summit of Faith

Just as climbers must know the path, carry the right equipment, train with discipline, and trust their guide, so must we in our walk with God.

God never promises the trail will be easy. He tells us plainly: the way is hard. But He also assures us that it is worth it.

Life’s wide trail is littered with shortcuts and false hopes—the “I’m a good person” path that never reaches Heaven’s summit. But the narrow way, though steep and demanding, leads to eternal life.

Everest’s peak may be the highest point on earth, but the summit of faith is higher still. Those who walk in darkness stumble and fall, but those who walk in the light press on toward glory.

1 John 1:7 (ESV)“But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

Questions for the Journey

As you consider the path you are walking, pause and reflect:

  • Are you walking in righteousness—turning away from sin?
  • Are you walking in grace—turning away from revenge and bitterness?
  • Are you walking in love—turning away from selfishness?

Every step matters. The trail you choose determines the destination you reach.

So I ask you plainly: What trail are you walking in?

Step onto the narrow path today. Walk in the light—the summit awaits.
